I had a visual of a smear on the street, seeping into the gutter, moving its way down.
I had a visual of the House of Commons, with everyone in it, then I heard a violin play unharmoniously.

The facts reported by The Verge: “Apple CEO Tim Cook has warned that UK plans to force companies to unlock encrypted communications would have “dire consequences” for both security and privacy. Cook said in an interview with the daily telegraph that the draft surveillance legislation — known as the Investigatory Powers bill — seems misguided. “If you halt or weaken encryption, the people that you hurt are not the folks that want to do bad things. It’s the good people. The other people know where to go,” said Cook.
The draft bill was unveiled in parliament last week by the UK’s home secretary Theresa May, and touches on many issues of digital surveillance. If the bill becomes law it will enshrine methods of bulk surveillance currently practiced by British spy agency GCHQ, force ISPs to retain every internet user’s browsing history for 12 months, and place new obligations on tech firms to decrypt any communications requested by the police.
Apple has been a vocal supporter of tough security standards in the years following the Snowden revelations, and has sought to remove itself from the struggle for data between users and government by deploying encryption that even it can’t crack. In a recent investigation in the US, police were told by Apple that the company simply could not comply with an order to decrypt messages, and the Obama administration has since suggested it will not pursue legislation compelling companies to introduce backdoors. The problem is that even with sophisticated encryption systems, there are still program designers who have the keys. So there is always a possibility of “back doors” if program designers desire to make them. And those back doors are usually undetectable…unless the keys can be gained from the program developer(s). So…those people who do develop these systems would become targets by many….in fact…they probably already are.
It is also my understanding, however, that truly sophisticated encryption formulas exist that would require thousands of computers working months and months full time with only a miniscule chance of cracking the code.
As we move into an age where many code techniques are fast becoming obsolete, and development of artificial intelligence is gaining a foothold, we are entering a very dangerous time.
If the UK does allow this breach of personal liberty, either some new form of communication will develop….(perhaps a return to the cold war era tactics of spy craft and espionage)….or…if not…then Orwell’s “Big Brother” will truly have become a reality. As he said “The book ‘1984’ was NOT meant to be an instruction manual.” And yet…day by day….

I’ve pondered a few times about those concepts in “1984” like you, too. I’ve noted a few similarities in real life that seem to parallel it. Thanks for the note.
